Preparing for UK Delivery - What to Expect

Henry Rook

If you are receiving your nucleus colony by post, a small amount of preparation helps ensure the day runs smoothly.

Our nucs are securely packed for transit and sent via Royal Mail. They are prepared with ventilation and stability in mind. On delivery day, your role is simply to receive the colony promptly and install it in a controlled way.

This article forms part of our guide to Preparing for a Nucleus Colony.

Be Available on Delivery Day

Ensure someone is present to receive the parcel.

A nuc should not be left in direct sunlight or exposed to rain. If possible, plan to be available during the expected delivery window.

Once received, place the nuc in a shaded, sheltered position until you are ready to install it.

Keep the Nuc Cool and Undisturbed

Delivery boxes are ventilated appropriately for transit. There is no need to open the box on arrival.

Avoid leaving the nuc inside a warm house or vehicle. A cool garage, shaded porch or sheltered outdoor space is suitable for short-term holding before installation.

Installation should take place on the same day wherever possible.

Prepare in Advance

Before delivery day, ensure:

  • The hive is fully assembled and positioned
  • Frames are fitted and ready
  • Tools and protective clothing are set aside
  • Feeding equipment is available if required

If any of these steps are incomplete, review How to Set Up a Hive for a Nuc and Getting Ready for Your Bees before the delivery date.

If Delivery Is Later Than Expected

Royal Mail delivery is generally reliable, but occasional delays can occur.

Provided the nuc remains ventilated and out of direct heat, bees tolerate short transit periods well. Install the colony as soon as reasonably possible once it arrives.

Installation

When ready, transfer the frames into the prepared brood box in their original order and orientation.

Keep the process steady and avoid prolonged hive openings. Preparation beforehand keeps installation controlled.

If you are collecting in person rather than receiving delivery, see How to Transport Your Nuc Safely for guidance on vehicle transport.

Receiving a nuc by post is straightforward when preparation is complete. Shade, ventilation and prompt installation are the key principles.
