Installing Your Nuc - Step by Step

Installation is a controlled transfer from the nuc box into your prepared hive. It does not need to be rushed, but it should be organised.

If you have worked through the Preparing for a Nucleus Colony guide, your hive should already be assembled, positioned and ready.

The aim now is simple: transfer the frames in their original order with minimal disturbance.

Before You Begin

Check that:

  • The brood box is open and ready
  • Frames with foundation are fitted and pushed together
  • Tools and protective clothing are to hand
  • A feeder is available if required

If any of these steps are incomplete, review How to Set Up a Hive for a Nuc before proceeding.

Choose a calm, dry day if possible. Avoid strong wind or heavy rain.

Position the Nuc

Place the nuc box next to or directly in front of the hive in its final position.

Open the roof of the hive and remove enough frames from the centre of the brood box to create space for the nuc frames.

Keep removed frames nearby and upright.

Transfer the Frames

Open the nuc box carefully.

Remove the first frame and inspect briefly to orient yourself. Then transfer each frame into the centre of the brood box in the same order and orientation as they were in the nuc.

Maintaining the original sequence helps preserve brood organisation and colony stability.

Continue until all nuc frames are placed together in the centre of the brood box.

Close the Brood Box

Replace the remaining frames on either side of the nuc frames to fill the box.

Push frames together to maintain correct spacing. Ensure nothing is trapped at the edges.

Replace the crownboard and roof securely.

The aim is not a detailed inspection. It is a clean transfer.

What About Remaining Bees?

There will usually be some bees left in the nuc box.

Gently tip or shake them in front of the hive entrance. They will make their way inside.

Do not leave the empty nuc box beside the hive.

Feeding

If forage is limited or the weather unsettled, you may choose to feed 1:1 sugar syrup after installation.

If you are unsure, see Feeding a New Nuc for guidance on when feeding is appropriate.

After Installation

Close the hive and leave it undisturbed.

In the first few days, the colony will reorganise, resume laying and begin orientating to its new location. Opening the hive again too soon rarely provides useful information and often sets progress back.

The next stage is simply observation from the outside.
