Buckfast Bees: Why We Use F1 Buckfast Queens in Our Nucs

If you're looking to buy a nucleus colony, you'll often see the queen described by breed or strain. Our nucs are supplied with marked F1 Buckfast queens, selected for the characteristics we want to see in the colonies we manage and supply.

But what does F1 Buckfast actually mean, and why do we use them?

What Are Buckfast Bees?

Buckfast bees were originally developed by Brother Adam at Buckfast Abbey through the selective breeding of different honey bee strains.

Today, Buckfast bees are bred for a combination of useful characteristics rather than simply appearance. Different breeding lines vary, but qualities commonly selected for include good temperament, productivity, and strong colony development.

For us, temperament is particularly important. We want colonies that are straightforward to inspect and manage, especially as many of the nucs we supply go to people keeping bees for the first time.

What Does F1 Buckfast Mean?

F1 refers to the first generation produced from controlled breeding.

An F1 Buckfast queen, therefore, comes from known selected breeding stock, giving greater predictability in the characteristics of the resulting colony than you would generally expect from an open-mated queen of unknown parentage.

That doesn't mean every colony will behave identically. Bees are living colonies, and temperament and performance are influenced by genetics, environment, weather, forage, and management.

It does, however, give us a good starting point.

Why We Use F1 Buckfast Queens

When raising nucleus colonies, we're looking for more than simply a queen that is laying.

We want to see a calm, manageable colony with a reliable brood pattern and steady development. We monitor our colonies throughout the season and select those that demonstrate the characteristics we want to pass on to customers.

A good nuc should give its new beekeeper a solid foundation from which to build a full colony.

This is particularly important for beginners. Learning to inspect a colony, recognise brood and handle frames is considerably easier with bees that are generally calm on the comb.

Are Buckfast Bees Good for Beginners?

They can be a very good choice.

A calm temperament doesn't remove the need to learn good handling and inspection techniques, and no colony of bees can be guaranteed to remain gentle in every circumstance. Weather, queen status, forage availability, and the way a colony is handled can all affect behaviour.

But starting with bees selected for manageable temperament gives a new beekeeper a much better foundation for learning.

It's one of the reasons temperament is an important part of how we assess the colonies we raise for nucs.

Will a Buckfast Colony Always Stay the Same?

Not necessarily.

The characteristics associated with an F1 queen apply to that queen and the colony headed by her. If she is later replaced naturally by the colony, her daughter may mate locally with drones of unknown genetics.

The resulting colony can therefore have different characteristics.

This is a normal part of keeping bees and one reason beekeepers continue to assess temperament, brood pattern, and colony performance rather than relying solely on the name of a strain.
